The Best Snacks for a Hike

Posted by Sandhill Slims on

The weather is beautiful outside and you’re feeling stir crazy after a long winter cooped up in your house. Deep down, you know there’s only one way you’re going to kick this down mood, and that’s with a nice hike. Taking some time for yourself and reacquainting yourself with the great outdoors is a great way to shake off the cold weather doldrums, but you can’t go unprepared! It’s important that you pack some good snacks to keep your energy levels up as you traverse rocky ridges and winding woods. That’s why we here at Sandhill Slims have put together this handy guide for some of the best snacks to take on a hike. Why not pack a few tasty Sandhill Slims beef sticks in your pack to ensure you’ve got the protein to tackle that hilltop?

-Trail Mix

With a name like that, it’s clear to see why trail mix is so perfect for taking on a hike, but this goes beyond just the name. The mix of fruit and nuts provides a good assortment of healthy fats, protein, and natural sugars that give you the energy to make it through your hike without getting too tired. Trail mix is also reasonably high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, which give you a healthy boost while keeping your blood sugar levels balanced. Balanced blood sugar means you won’t run into that crashing feeling as you roam around. Steer clear of the classic Swiss Mix and go with a mix that replaces the pieces of chocolate with dried fruit to avoid a sugar crash.

-Sunflower Seeds

A longtime favorite for baseball fans out for a day at the park, sunflower seeds are a portable and delicious snack that’s easy to throw in your pack. Loaded with valuable vitamins and fatty acids, they’ll give you an extra boost when you want to reach that summit. With a high amount of magnesium, they’ll also help to fend off fatigue, muscle cramps, and shin splints, which can bring a day of outdoor fun to a halt. Sunflower seeds will also help to keep your blood sugar balanced so you don’t run into a crash. Shelled sunflower seeds can make for a perfect addition to your trail mix as well.

-Energy Bars

There are many different varieties of energy bars on the market and they’re not all created equal. If you’re going the energy bar route, it’s important to choose one rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals. Steer clear of ones with large amounts of added sugars, because at that point, you’re basically just eating a candy bar. Instead of the one coated in chocolate, pick one with a granola base to ensure the energy you’re getting doesn’t end up biting you in the end.

-Ready-Made Tuna Salad Packages

If you want something tasty that you can eat when you take a break from your hike, these pre-made tuna packages are a great deal. When you eat the tuna on some crackers, not only do you get the protein and fatty acids tuna is known for, you also get an added energy boost from the carbs found in the crackers. Whether you go with a classic can of tuna or one of the special packages (easier to open, carry, and dispose of), this is a quick way to have something a bit more substantial than a snack, without the weighed down feeling of a big lunch. Depending on how hot it gets on the day of your hike, you might want to pack this in with an ice pack to keep it chilled, making for a very refreshing snack.

-Beef Jerky

If there’s one thing you’ve probably grasped by now, it’s how important protein is when you’re physically active. While you may think we’re a bit biased (and maybe we are) we think the best snack to take along on your hike is some beef jerky, from Sandhill Slims, naturally. Our beef jerky sticks are made with 100 percent grass fed Nebraska Sandhill pasture beef, and contain no MSG. They’re also free of gluten, nitrates, soy, trans fat, artificial sweeteners, and dyes. That means if you want a snack you can feel good about eating, there’s not much better than beef jerky from Sandhill Slims.

No matter which snack you end up picking, it’s absolutely vital that you make sure you’re well hydrated. Before you go out on your adventure, drink at least four cups of water to give you the hydration you’ll need, without requiring you to carry a bunch of water bottles. For your time in the wild, it’s a good idea to bring about two cups of water for every hour you’re going to be hiking. Water will help you avoid cramps and heat stroke, so it’s not something to be ignored.

When you go for a hike, it’s always a good idea to make sure you have a snack to keep your energy levels up. After all, nobody wants to be hangry in the woods! So whether you pick up some trail mix, go with an energy bar, side with the tuna, or (our personal favorite) beef jerky from Sandhill Slims, we know you’ll have a great day out with nature.
